Dr. Calvin M. "Cal" Poole

January 21, 1928 — February 25, 2018

Dr. Calvin M. Poole, DVM, “Cal”, 90, passed away at his home in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Sunday, February 25, 2018.Funeral service has been entrusted to the care of Dighton Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28, from 12:00 to 8:00PM at Dighton Marler Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 10:00AM at Dighton Marler Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater.

He was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma on January 21, 1928 to Merten and Edna (Daily) Poole. He was educated in the Stillwater school system. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Oklahoma A&M (now OSU) in 1950.

After a stint in the army where he reached the ranks of captain and was based in Japan, he returned to Oklahoma A&M and graduated in 1957 with his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
Upon graduation, Cal worked with Dr. Fischler in Indiana where he learned the very important skill of de-scenting skunks!

Cal was hired as a veterinarian at the Argonne Institute, Chicago, in 1963 until retiring in 1984 after which he built a very successful veterinary practice of his own in Lamont, Illinois. He retired from veterinary medicine in 1991 and then married the love of his life, Nina Delorme.
Nina and Cal never spent a day apart their entire marriage. They never had a cross word or fight and had 26 ½ years of harmonious life together. After marrying they moved to Missouri to a lovely, secluded property overlooking the lake with lots of nature including bears, bobcats and deer which they had a long standing feud over eating their plants.

It was in Missouri that Cal became a wood turner and made many wood bowls, vases and unique items which he freely gave to friends and family to their delight.

In 2014, Cal and Nina decided to come back to Cal’s hometown of Stillwater, Oklahoma and reside at Primrose Retirement Community where they made many new friends and enjoyed the company of a number of long time friends, some from as far back as grade school.
Cal never met a stranger. He greeted everyone with a genuine smile and a witty or pleasant comment, often times asking their age or height and if they were tall, whether they played basketball. Many commented how he was the most gentlemanly of men, holding doors, helping with coats and chairs and giving aid and a kind word wherever and whenever needed.
While courteous to a fault, Cal loved to play jokes and would make outrageous statements just to get a rise especially with his wife Nina.

In these busy, chaotic times, Cal was a blessing for his kindness, his consideration and his care for others. He will be sorely missed.

Cal was preceded in death by his parents, Merten and Edna (Daily) Poole; brother, Donald D. Poole.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nina Delorme and his children from his first marriage, daughter, Claudia Poole Johnson and spouse, Chris, daughter, Amy Poole Wilson and spouse, James, and son, Steve Poole and spouse, Kae. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or a charity of your choice, c/o Dighton Marler Funeral Home, 5106 N. Washington St., Stillwater, OK 74075.
