Alma F. Gunn

June 11, 1917 — October 11, 2019

Alma (Stub/Stubby) Frost (Ethridge) Gunn was born June 11, 1917, in Oklahoma City, OK to MC and Sally Jo (Frost) Ethridge. Alma was the 4th of 7 children born to this union. She passed from this earthly life to her eternal Heavenly home on October 11, 2019, at the age of 102 years, 4 months, at Willow Creek Health Care, Guthrie, OK, where she had resided for over a year after moving from the Crescent Care Center where she had lived for 5 years. Alma was raised in Waterloo, OK where her Father was Section Foreman for Santa Fe Railroad. She picked up the nickname “Stubby” as a toddler, and it stuck throughout her entire life. She graduated from Edmond High School. She then took over a job as a nanny from her sister in Yukon, OK to the family that owned the flour mill. After Wednesday night prayer meeting at the church she and her friends went for pie and coffee to a local café where she met Carl Birdie Gunn who was in town working on the construction of NW Highway. He was a widower from Montana with 3 small children and was 17 years older than her. They were married 3 months later on April 6, 1939, in Edmond, OK. It all seemed to work as after having 3 more children together they were married for 58 years before Carl went to Heaven in 1997. After Alma had raised all her children she went to work at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater in the Food Service Department where she retired after 20 years. In 1988, Carl and Alma moved to Crescent, OK, where they could be closer to Alma’s sister Reba (& Mac) McClure and their daughter, Bette Leo McClure. Alma was a very active and life-long member of the Nazarene Church.
Alma is survived by her youngest daughter, Jacquelyn Rae (Gunn) Bounds (Crescent, OK); grandchildren Darci Terrell (Crescent, OK); Stephanie Bounds (Nashville, TN); John Terrell (Seattle, WA); Greg, Robin, and Nathan Gunn (Oklahoma City, OK); Phillip Gunn (TX); Gena (Mahaffey) Menhusen (Stillwater, OK); Gary Mahaffey (Houston, TX); Mark Stewart (Edmond, OK); Gail (Stewart) Purcell (Oklahoma City, OK); Larry Stewart (Harrah, OK); and Christine Stewart (Seattle, WA); and numerous great and great great grandchildren. She is also survived by daughters-in-law Betty (Matthews) Gunn (Perry, OK) and Bobbie (Diffee) Gunn (Oklahoma City, OK), brother Don Ethridge (Midwest City, OK), and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Carl Birdie Gunn; sons Truman Gunn and Gordon Gunn; daughters Birdie (Gunn) Terrell, Ellen (Gunn) Mahaffey, and Lora (Lolly) (Gunn) Stewart; her parents, MC and Sally Jo (Frost) Ethridge; and siblings Thelma Campbell, Velma “DeeDee” Ethridge, Bill Ethridge, Reba McClure, and MC Ethridge.
