Betty Irene Hellar was born on May 21, 1942 in Wichita, KS to Lee L. and Mary E. (Marsh) Hellar. She was raised in Wichita, graduating from West High School in 1959. She then enrolled in Southwest Methodist College in Winfield, KS. Betty returned to Wichita where she worked in banking. She and her brother Dennis moved into an apartment. It was there that Betty met the love of her life, her next door neighbor John Alan Hewitt. John worked for Boeing and towards the end of the Vietnam War, Boeing relocated the family to Seattle, WA for three years. While in Washington, Betty continued her career in the banking industry. Betty and John enjoyed taking trips on their motorcycle. They traveled to Canada and Alaska. They went to Yosemite, Yellowstone and down to Denver. While in Denver, they ran out of money and John accepted a job selling cars. They spent over a decade in Denver where Betty worked at a local bank. In 1990, Mr. Hewitt was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident. In 1996, Betty moved to Perry, OK . She had never lived in a small town and she found that work was hard to find. She tried working at a local deli and never really felt comfortable. In 1997 she began working as a cashier at the Perry Walmart. Betty loved her job as a cashier and she had many customers who would wait in her line just to see her smile and hear her say "have a blessed day!" She ranked as the top cashier nearly each of her 15 + years at Walmart and she was rewarded for her hard work with several trips, prizes, and many loyal customers and friends. When she was not working, Betty enjoyed swimming and bowling. When she was 7 yrs old she was given a camera by her Hellar grandparents and she enjoyed taking pictures of everything. John instilled in Betty a love of watching the Denver Bronchos, stock car races, and the demolition derby. Betty had gone to the Methodist Church with her Hellar grandparents and the Church of God with her Marsh grandparents. Betty attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church with John and she became a long-time member of the Lighthouse Church after moving to Perry. Betty also became involved in the Women"s Aglow group. She served faithfully as vice president and traveled to many conferences. Betty valued her relationship with the Lord and she was never happier than when she was spending time with Christ, children or animals. Betty was preceded in death by her parents Lee and Mary Hellar. Husband John A. Hewitt. A nephew Randy Lee Hellar. Two brothers: Joe Ray and Dennis Lee Hellar. She is survived by a sister-in-law Olive Hellar. A nephew Timothy Lynn Heller.
