Donald Ray Stangl

Donald Ray Stangl, 79, of Perry, Oklahoma, was the son of William and Lillian (Ruth) Wilson, Stangl. He was born on January 27, 1937 in Okarche, Oklahoma and died on June 28, 2016 in the Perry Memorial Hospital. Don graduated from Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Okarche, Class of 1956 and attended St. Gregory"s University in Shawnee. He married Anita Maul on June 14, 1958. They had four sons together, Frank, Timothy, Phillip and Jeffrey. Don enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard and was honorably discharged on April 1, 1963. On June 26, 1982, Don married Helen Phillips, Dexter in Perry, Oklahoma. They met at the #1 Oklahoma Polka Club in Enid, Oklahoma. Don and Helen spent many Saturday evenings over the years dancing at Tetik"s Barn in Perry, Oklahoma. They also enjoyed traveling together; including cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and the Mississippi River, as well as several other trips to Montana, Oregon, Missouri, Florida, the Grand Canyon and digging for diamonds and crystals in Arkansas. Don especially enjoyed the several one-day "Mystery Tours" he and Helen spent exploring Oklahoma. He loved desserts and candy, especially chocolate candy. Don would much rather have dessert than a meal. He also enjoyed gardening, tinkering around his shop and driving his tractor. He was a good, kind man with a wonderful sense of humor and; who would help anyone in need. Don was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Perry, Oklahoma and a member of the 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus. He had worked as a driver and heavy equipment operator for Smith Trucking and Basin Drilling Company in Hennessey, Oklahoma. When Don and Helen moved to Perry, he was employed with Exchange Bank & Trust. He retired in 2010 after 18 years of service with the bank. Don was diagnosed with Hodgkin"s Lymphoma in 2006 and fought hard through various chemotherapy sessions, doctor"s visits and hospital stays. Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home. Don is survived by his wife, Helen Stangl of the home; four sons, Frank and Darla Stangl of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Timothy Vincent Brown of Kansas City, Kansas, Phillip and Lydia Stangl of Kansas City, Kansas and Jeffrey Stangl and Sara Campbell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Kenny and Tamara Wood of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Erica and Kyle Shipley of Evansville, Indiana, Kelly Stangl and fianc" John Brown of Choctaw, Oklahoma and Kevin Stangl and Grace Keener of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; six great grandchildren; sister, Lillian and Jimmy Davis of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Helen"s children and spouses; Michael Dexter of Fort Worth, Texas, Michelle and Gary Lawson of Perry, Oklahoma and Marla and Derick Ezell of McKinney, Texas; granddaughter, Megan Lawson of Norman, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruth Stangl; three brothers, Howard Stangl, Edward Stangl and Thomas Stangl and two sisters, Loretta Stangl, Bright and Kathryn Stangl, Hewes. Visitation will be held Friday, July 1, 2016 in the Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home, 203 Fir Ave, Perry, Oklahoma, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The family will be available for visitation from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 2, 2016 in the St Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 421 N 9th, Perry, OK. Interment at Mt Carmel Catholic Cemetery will follow the Mass.
