Gay Elsener Hines, 75-year-old Stillwater resident, passed away Friday, August 29, 2008 in Oklahoma City.
Gay Elsener Hines was born July 23, 1933 on the family farm in Tipton, OK to Walter and Mary Ruth (Pickrell) Elsener. She was the fifth of five children. She was a 1951 graduate of Tipton High School and a 1955 graduate of Oklahoma A&M College. She married her high school sweetheart, Gib Hines, on January 8, 1956, in Tipton. They made their home together in Stillwater, living here for the past fifty-two and one half years. They raised five children together.
Gay earned her living as a pre-school teacher at the Highland Park United Methodist pre-school for seven years. She then worked at the Edmon Low Library at Oklahoma State University for twenty two years before her retirement in 1999. Gay was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church.
Gay loved to sew, and she made most of the clothes worn by her children as they grew up. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She was a voracious reader, as shown by the many volumes of books in her home. She loved her OSU Cowboys and spent many hours listening to her trusted am-fm radio as various OSU teams competed. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, adoring each and every one of her wonderful grandchildren. Mrs. Hines is survived by her husband Gib Hines; by five children, Gary Lynn Hines and his wife Janet of Stillwater, Greg Allen Hines and his wife Lisa of Claremore, Grant Warren Hines and his wife Rena of Stillwater, Brenda Gail Zacharias and her husband Kevin of Stillwater, and Beverly Gay Williams and her husband Duane of Oklahoma City. She is also survived by her sister; Mary Hines Cross and Doug Rohde of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; her sisters-in-law Elizabeth Elsener of Altus, Joan Elsener of Stillwater and Lois Elsener of Oklahoma City, OK, and one brother-in-law, C.A. Gough of Oklahoma City, OK. She is also loved and will be missed by her ten grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren and thirteen nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary Ruth (Pickrell) Elsener, three brothers, W.A. Elsener, Gordon Elsener and Fred Elsener and one sister, Fern Elsener Gough.
Funeral services for Gay Elsener Hines will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at the Highland Park United Methodist Church in Stillwater with Reverend Derek Belase officiating. Visitation will occur at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home on Monday, September 1, from 6pm until 8pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Life Adult Day Center, 411 West Matthews, Stillwater, OK 74075 (Attn: Jane Carlson) or OSU Friends of the Library, 216 Library, Stillwater, OK 74078 (Attn: Chad Haney).
