Gunter K Anderson

Cherokee Artist and Basket Weaver Gunter K. Anderson passed to the World of Enchanted Baskets at noon on the 4th day of January 2011. She was born Gunter Payne Kinsey on the 16th of October 1920 at Kinsey, Oklahoma on Grand River three miles north of Salina in Mayes County, Oklahoma to Ernest Vail Kinsey and Sallie Mayo Morgan. She attended schools in Salina, Sapulpa, Cleveland and Terlton. She was a student at Oklahoma A & M College where she was elected as Freshman Queen in the Fall of 1938. She married Jimmie Edward Anderson of Cushing on November 3, 1940 at Tip, Mayes County, Oklahoma. They lived in Chandler OK, Fort Sam Houston, TX, Fort Benning, GA and Pryor, OK before establishing permanent residence in Cushing. Two children were born to this marriage: Nicholas in 1941 and Sallie in 1942. In 1983, Gunter and Jimmie Anderson established Euchee Valley Memorial Park just east of Cushing. After Jimmies death in 1993, Gunter continued to operate the cemetery till 2000 when she passed the responsibility to her children. In 1997 at the age of 77, Gunter discovered her natural talent as a basket weaver. Since then she produced many beautiful and intricate baskets. One of her baskets was honored with first place in the national Daughters of the American Revolution Arts and Crafts Contest. Mrs. Anderson was a long standing member of Cushings Presbyterian Church, a past member of Geographic, Hypatia and PEO and was a current 50-Year Member of DAR, Oklahoma Native Basket Weavers Association and a charter member of the Cherokee Artist Association. She was also lifetime member of the VFW. She will be missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Vail Kinsey Jr., her husband Jimmie E. Anderson and her grandson James W. Frazier, Jr. She is survived by her son Nick Anderson and wife Kathy of Haysville, KS; her daughter Sallie and husband Jim Frazier of Cushing; grandson Phil Frazier and wife Chasity of Amarillo, TX; and granddaughters: Beth and husband Preston Underwood of West Des Moines, IA; Robin and husband Rick Allford of Amarillo, TX; and Kristine and husband John Mertes of Cushing, OK; seven great-grandsons and two great- granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 2:00 P. M. at the Presbyterian Church Cushing. Interment will be held at Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery during Easter weekend.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Presbyterian Church Women's Association, Cushing, OK.
