Mertie Juanita Vick, 87, passed away on May 30, 2018 at her home in Perry, Oklahoma surrounded by loved ones. Funeral service will be held on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 10:00a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Perry, with Reverend William Metz officiating. Interment will follow at Richburg Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday June 2, from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. and Sunday, June 3, from 1-6p.m. at Dighton-Marler Funeral Home Chapel in Perry.
Juanita was born November 28, 1930 in Perry, Oklahoma to James Vernon (Shorty) Melton and Mertie Margaret (League) Melton. The family then moved to Salem, Illinois where her Dad, Shorty, worked as a welder in the oil fields. Juanita graduated from Salem High School in Salem, Illinois in 1949. The family traveled back and forth from Salem to Perry where lots of aunts and uncles lived. Juanita was introduced to Ewald Karcher by her Aunt Vernie and after a short courtship they were married at the Christ Lutheran Church on November 25th 1950 in Perry Oklahoma. They made their first home on the farm located southwest of Perry. They lived on the farm for 2 1/2 years. Then they moved to their home on Jackson St in Perry and then in 1955, they bought their new home on Maple Street in Perry. Juanita lived at this home until her death. Ewald Karcher died on May 30 1994 after a severe heart attack. Juanita married Roger Vick on December 1, 1994 at the Nazarene Church in Perry, Oklahoma.
Juanita played the piano and sang and she had been entertaining at the local nursing homes and at the Billings Fairchild Center since 1981. She usually played two or three times a week somewhere in the community. Even in retirement, Juanita spent many hours playing music for people in churches, nursing homes and community activities. She was very proud of her award from the city of Perry for her years of music service to the community. Juanita worked as a waitress for the Ok Café, and Sooners Corner restaurants. In the 1970’s she drove a school bus for the Perry Public Schools. She was also quite the seamstress and made most of her children’s and grandchildren’s clothes.
Juanita is preceded in death by her first husband Ewald Karcher, her son Robbie Ewald Karcher, her brothers James and Eugene; her sister Zoleme and great granddaughter Halle Lynette Clayton.
She is survived by her husband Roger Vick, her son Darrell Dean Karcher, her daughter Margaret Janan Voss and her husband Ralph. She is also survived by her grandchildren Levi Karcher and wife Teresa, Jennifer Karcher and husband Chris, Abraham Lee Karcher, Denise Lynette Clayton and husband Kelly and Joshua Dean Feken and wife Melissa, as well as six great grandchildren, Madison Blocker and husband Aaron, Nathan Karcher, Strauss Karcher, Willow Karcher, Trenton Clayton and Colt Feken.
