Lucille Gregg Hedger

Lucille Gregg Hedger, of Stillwater, was welcomed to heaven by her Savior and her husband of 66 years, Hugh Kenneth Hedger on October 1, 2011. Lucille passed from this life after 92 extraordinary years of living, teaching, and serving others. Services have been entrusted to the care of the Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater and will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 6th at the Wickline United Methodist Church (417 Mid-America Blvd) in Midwest City, OK. Burial will follow at Denison Cemetery in Idabel, OK on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Family will greet friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 2-5pm on Wednesday at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Stillwater.
Lucille Gregg was born on May 29, 1919 in Idabel, OK to William Riley Gregg and Laura Elizabeth Pitts Gregg. She was raised and attended school in Idabel. After graduation, Lucille spent two years studying at Murray State School on an agriculture scholarship. While attending Murray State, she married her childhood sweetheart and her best friend, Hugh Hedger. Lucille and Hugh were married and relocated to Stillwater to continue their education.
Lucille taught home economics in Cleveland, OK and Tulsa, OK. She then went to work for the Point Four Program in Ethiopia for 6 years. While in Ethiopia, she taught math and nutrition. She was honored with the privilege of being asked to cook a meal for the Ethiopian Emporer Haile Selassie. After returning stateside, the Hedgers relocated to Stillwater, where Lucille obtained her Masters Degree and did her Doctorate work. She spent 10 years teaching home economics in Choctaw, OK, and then finished her career in the Food Service Division of the State Department, where she retired after 16 years.
She was a member of both the First United Methodist Church of Stillwater and the Wickline United Methodist Church. She was also involved in the N.O.A.H. group at her church, Kappa Kappa Iota, Point Four Program in Ethiopia, Oklahoma County 4 H, and F.C.C.L.A. After retiring, she enjoyed painting, reading, gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and visiting with her friends at Golden Oaks in Stillwater.
Lucille was a sweet and selfless woman whose life left a mark on this world. Her impact will be felt for generations and her legacy of kindness and service will undoubtedly live on through the lives of her family and all of her students. Lucille was a supportive wife, a loving mother, a proud grandmother and great grandmother, a dedicated educator, and a loyal friend. She will be forever missed by all of those fortunate enough to have called her friend.
She is survived by her two daughters: Kara Kirschner of Midwest City, OK and Laura Jeane Flesner and husband, Ken, of Stillwater, OK, and Karl Schmid, who was looked upon as a son; four grandchildren: Nick Malone, Chris Martin, Elizabeth Flesner and Dawn Johnson; and three great-grandchildren: Madelyn, Connor and Logan. A brother, James Dale Gregg and wife, Joanna, of Kingston, TX ; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Kenneth Hedger, her parents, a sister: Willa Mae Parsons, and two brothers: Eugene Lee Gregg and William Riley Gregg.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hugh Hedger Horticulture Scholarship Fund in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home (5106 N. Washington. Stillwater, OK 74075) or the Wickline United Methodist Church.
