Newel Leon Coffman, 83, a longtime Ripley resident, passed from this life on Monday, December 27, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater and will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 30, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ripley with Pastors Bill and Delores Terrell presiding.
Newel was born on March 19, 1927 to Otis and Ollie Coffman in Cabool, Missouri. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Newel worked most of his life as a truck driver for Caterpillar, retiring after 30 years. In July of 1977, Newell married the love of his life Shirley S. Butler. He loved church and his custodial ministry. He was a member of the Friendship Community Church of Mannford where he served as a deacon. Newel was also an honorary member of the FFA and 4-H clubs. In his spare time he enjoyed squirrel hunting, garage sales, and especially spending time with his family.
Newel is survived by his wife Shirley of the home; daughter Rinnie Smith and husband Pete of Monkey Island, Oklahoma; son Leonard Coffman and wife Angela of Ripley; five grandchildren Ryi Ann Spencer, Brigett Broyles, Chris Coffman, Dillon Coffman, and Heather Coffman; great grandchildren Baylee Coffman, Sierra Broyles, Kaleb Coffman, Kamren Coffman, Taylor Coffman, Kotah Broyles, and Dalton Broyles; and two brothers, Bob Coffman and Kenny Coffman.
Newel was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alvin, and sister Irene.
