Paul Gilbert, 85, of Stillwater passed from this life on October 21, 2015 with his loving family by his side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home and a service celebrating Pauls life will be held on Friday, October 23, 2015 at 11am at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater. Interment will take place on Saturday October 24, 2015 at 10am at the Fanshawe Cemetery in Fanshawe, OK.
Paul was born on September 3, 1930 in Emmet, AR. He was raised by his mother, Minnie Gilbert, and his aunt Ophelia Thompson in Hope, AR and graduated from Hope High School in 1947. Following his graduation, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served his country honorably for 6 years serving in both Germany and Korea. Paul married Joye Elaine Perkins in Battle Creek, MI on January 9, 1953. They had four children Michael, Sandra, Stan, and Roger Gilbert. They enjoyed 62 delightful years by each others side and raised their 4 wonderful children together.
Paul graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1957 and earned a Masters Degree from Louisiana Tech in 1962. Throughout his career he worked for American Oil in El Dorado, AR; Northwestern States Cement in Mason City, Iowa; Wynnewood Refinery in Wynnewood, OK; and Burk Oil in McPherson, KS. He retired for the last time in 1992.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, active in the local Republican Party, Kiwanis Club, bowling leagues, and Habitat for Humanity.
Paul was a longtime member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a lifelong fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks. He recalled with great fondness his time as a Boy Scout and he was proud of his service in the Army, which he claimed was his backup plan if the Chemical Engineering plan didnt pan out. Paul was an honest and outgoing family man who never met a stranger. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a delightful smile that most often appeared around his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, farming and tending his pecan orchard. Paul Gilbert was a loving husband, a dedicated father, a proud grandpa and great grandpa, a caring brother, a hardworking employee, and a loyal and trusted friend who will certainly be missed by those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his mother Minnie Gilbert, his Aunt Ophelia Thompson, and a brother, Harold Gilbert. Paul is survived by the love of his life, Joye Gilbert, four children; Michael Gilbert and wife Verna, of Humble, TX, Sandra Morgan and husband Gregor, of Stillwater, OK, Stanley Gilbert and wife Jenifer, of Wynnewood, OK, and Roger Gilbert and wife Tonya, of Perkins, OK. He is also survived by two siblings, Alice Weatherby and Phillip Gilbert, 8 grandchildren, Chad Wallace, Selena Wallace, Stephanie Sperling, Seth Morgan, Sean Morgan, David White, Paul Gilbert, and Mark Gilbert, 11 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in Pauls name to Stillwater Habitat for Humanity in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, 5106 N. Washington, Stillwater, OK 74075.
