Saundra was born on June 8, 1951 to William H. Smith, Sr. and Barbara (Fry) Smith in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She was raised and educated in Stillwater, graduating from C.E. The couple especially enjoyed their time in Germany, Spain, and Holland. Saundra and James settled back in Stillwater after he left the military in 1988. Here she worked as a shift manager at the McDonalds, where she was well known for telling people Have a Blessed Day in the drive through and leading Bible Study on break. She was also a member of the Pawnee Full Gospel Church. In her spare time she enjoyed decorating cakes, sculptures, sewing, reading, and anything crafty. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
