March 9, 1916 — August 20, 2014

Viola Lorene Smith, 98, of Orlando passed peacefully from this life to receive her heavenly reward on August 20, 2014 in Perry, OK. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home and a service celebrating Viola"s life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Orlando United Methodist Church with Pastor Adrian Pollard officiating. A public visitation will take place on Friday, August 22, 2014 from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm with the family greeting friends at the funeral home from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Friday evening. Viola Lorene (Frey) Smith was born March 9, 1916, at Mulhall, Okla., to Samuel and Lena Frey. She graduated from Mulhall High School in 1935 and then went to work for the ASC office in Guthrie where she worked until her marriage. She and Edward Earl Smith were united in marriage on May 30, 1939, and were blessed with six children. They recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. After their marriage, Earl and Viola lived on a farm northwest of Orlando until 1977. At that time, they bought a house in Orlando where they lived until entering the nursing home in 2013. Viola was a long-time and faithful member of the Orlando United Methodist Church where she served on various committees, taught children"s Sunday School, helped with Bible School, and was an active member and officer of the United Methodist Women. Tending her home and fulfilling her role as wife, mother, and grandmother was always important and foremost to her. She enjoyed her vegetable garden and loved working with her flowers. An excellent cook, Viola hosted many family dinners. Viola was a hard worker and enjoyed her life. She liked to read and was always interested in finding ways to live and eat healthier. Although limited some in the ability to get around in recent years, she still wanted to do as much as she could. She had great compassion and understanding for others and was faithful in donating to various charities including supporting veteran causes and the homeless. She enjoyed baking cookies and sharing with neighbors at Christmas time. Viola is survived by her husband, three sons and their spouses: Jim and Lois Smith, Perry; John and Donna Smith, Spring, Tex.; and Don and Glenda Smith, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; two daughters and their spouses: Gloria and Gary Koch, Orlando; and Sherry and Jerry Gottschalk, Mannford; 13 grandchildren: Tonya Schwartz, Alisha Kirtley, Tisha McKissick, Sandi McCormick, Greg Koch, Genelle Crochet, Geoff Koch, Michelle Russell, Melissa Schedlbauer, Michael Smith, Shannon Byrd, Deidre Boyd, and Lindsay Gilbert; 28 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Leola Passow, Topeka, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter Wanda Faye; three brothers: Fred, Bill, and Harry; and four sisters: Ann, Katherine, Frances, and Maxine. The family requests memorials be made in Viola"s name to the Orlando United Methodist Church Building Fund or to Companion Hospice, in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Perry, 203 E. Fir, Perry, OK. 73077.
