Alma Ruth Horn

Alma Ruth Manire was born Dec.6, 1914 in Elmore City, Oklahoma to Horace Bishop Manire and Mary Della Moore Manire. She was the third child of four children.
She lived through our nations depression and learned to not be wasteful. This was reflected in the way she appreciated the necessities of life. She was an advocate of higher education and knew that it was a way to have choices in your life. She graduated from Classen High School, Oklahoma City, in 1933. She attended Central State College in Edmond then transferred to Oklahoma A & M College to finish her degree. She was working her way through college at the OAMC registrars office when a terrible explosion wrecked the office injuring many people and destroying many records. She was asked to stop her education to help reorganize the office. She never finished school, lacking only a few hours. This event created in her a desire for her children to get their degree no matter what she had to sacrifice.
She met Joe Horn at a college dance. She fell in love and was married October 7, 1939 at Epworth Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. The following year her first child Joe Horn III was born in Stillwater.
Her husband, Joe, won a lucrative Navy contract to clean uniforms during the war. This contract produced the capital to build the Varsity Cleaners and later the Varsity Tux Shop. Alma Ruth worked tirelessly for the success of these businesses.
Jim Horn was born 4 1/2 years after Joe. Twenty two months later Sue Horn was born. Alma Ruth immediately began her most successful career, that of being a caring and devoted mother. She was loving, selfless, and always set a good example. As her children grew she continued to provide for them with care and wisdom. Each of her children revere her to this day.
After her children left home she had the opportunity to grow in new ways. She helped start a Phi Mu sorority at OSU and became a member. She became the treasurer of that organization. She attended Friday educational programs at the First United Methodist Church. She traveled to her childrens homes and took a trip to Europe with her church group She became involved in the Payne County Extension Society. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed learning new recipes and techniques. She loved to cook for her family.
Alma Ruth was a patriotic American and appreciated living in this great country. She was so honored and pleased when she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She always had an American flag displayed in her home.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her brother, Hubert Manire and her sister Louise Anglin. She is survived by: her sons, Joseph M Horn III and his wife Joan of College Station, TX.; James M. Horn and his wife Nancy of Stillwater, OK.; and her daughter Sue Horn Egizi and her husband Ralph, of Johnson City, TN; sister, Estelle Chambers, Oklahoma City. grandchildren: Thomas M. Horn, Rye, NY, Karen Horn Hudson, College Station, TX.; Alec R. Egizi, Chicago IL, Angela R. Morales-Egizi, Chicago, IL.; Jason M. Horn, Austin, TX., Justin M. Horn, Madison, WI; five great-grandchildren: Megan Claire Horn, Andrew M. Horn and Jessica Claire Horn all of Rye, NY and Peyton M. Hudson and Hailey Anne Hudson of College Station, TX.
Services will be Saturday March 3, 2007 at Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home Chapel 2:00 PM Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home, Stillwater, Oklahoma
