Barbara Jean Penick

October 26, 1932 — July 21, 2025

Perkins, Oklahoma

Barbara Jean Penick went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 21, 2025, surrounded by her family. Barbara was born on October 26, 1932, in Enid, Oklahoma to Garrett Brown Lyon and Ura Arletta Lyon. When Barbara was 9 years old her family moved to Kansas City, Kansas where her father worked as a chemist for Philip’s 66. Barbara graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1950. Barbara attended Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas where she met Bob Penick. Bob and Barbara were married on June 26, 1952. They lived in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and Clarksville, Tennessee before settling in Austin, Texas.

In 1963, Bob and Barbara had a daughter, Penny Jean Penick. Barbara was a wonderful mother to Penny. Barbara and Penny enjoyed taking hikes together, and the family enjoyed going fishing together. When Penny started Kindergarten, Barbara began teaching. Barbara was an excellent teacher. She taught Kindergarten at Brentwood Christian School for 26 years. Barbara was also a World Bible School teacher, teaching the Bible by correspondence to many students around the world.

Barbara enjoyed oil painting, woodworking, gardening, and rock collecting. She was a very good cook, making many family favorites including her fudge square brownies and thin crispy chocolate chip cookies. Bob and Barbara had a lake place on Lake Palestine in eastern Texas, where they enjoyed spending time fishing. Barbara enjoyed traveling, especially with her sister Phyllis. In 1984, Barbara and Phyllis made a trip to see their brother Kenneth who was stationed in Seoul, South Korea, a trip which she remembered fondly for the rest of her life.

In 1998, Bob and Barbara moved to Perkins, Oklahoma so they could be close to their children and grandchildren. Barbara designed the house that they had built at 509 NE 5th Street in Perkins and later her home next to Robert and Penny at 14321 S. Country Club Rd. Barbara used her home to show hospitality to her family and her many friends.

Granmama planned fun days for her grandchildren with treasure hunts, games, and treats. She also helped homeschool five of her grandchildren, teaching them reading, science, and history. When Rosie, Malachi, and Moses came to our family, she was very happy to have more grandchildren. She was very happy to see her great-grandchildren Myles, Liberty, Katherine, and Mary Agnes. Barbara was also dear Granmama to Daniel, Ginger, Gabby, David, Raphael, and Annalee.

Barbara was a member of the Perkins church of Christ. She was a beloved Bible class teacher. Barbara had many dear friends that she loved. Barbara looked forward to calls from dear friend Betty Savory who called her faithfully several times every week after Bob passed away.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Robert Wade Penick, her parents, sister Phyllis Turner and brother Kenneth Lyon and by an infant daughter, Penny Rene. She is survived by daughter Penny Wall and husband Robert of Perkins; grandchildren Ethan Wall and wife Deidre of Perkins, Tammy, Joseph, Nehemiah, Noah, Beulah, Amos, Lazarus, Rosie, Malachi, and Moses Wall; great-grandchildren Myles, Liberty, Katherine, and Mary Agnes Wall; nephews Walter and Steve Turner, and niece Sherry Larsen and son Blake Larsen.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 24 at 2 p.m. at the Perkins church of Christ in Perkins, Oklahoma. Following the funeral, graveside services will be held at the Perkins Cemetery. Arrangements are being provided by Dighton-Marler Funeral Home.

Robert and Penny wish to express thanks to Tammy and Beulah for their special caregiving for their grandmother and to family and friends who have been a blessing to Barbara and the family at this time.
