Dorothy passed from this life at Legacy Village of Stillwater, March 10, 2026 at the age of 93 with her family by her side. She was born in Stillwater on March 28, 1932; the daughter of Carol and Merle (Humphrey) Rickstrew.
Services for Dorothy Ruth Nixon are planned Thursday, March 19 at 10:00 am at Dighton Marler Funeral Home. Pastor John Dickey will officiate the services. Interment will take place in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Family and friends are welcome to make memorial contributions in the name of Dorothy Nixon to the Stillwater Humane Society; Alzheimer’s Dementia Research Foundation; Dementia Society of American; or to a charity of your choice.
She attended Stillwater Public Schools and graduated Stillwater High School in 1950. She then attended OSU for 2 years and took a computer class at Meridian Technology.
Dorothy began her employment with OSU in 1951 in the age of the manual typewriter and remained in the Journalism and Broadcasting Department for 55 years. Besides working in the same place for 55 years, Dorothy lived in Stillwater her entire life.
While working at OSU, she met her husband Elton Nixon while he was working for the OSU Police Department. They were married in Stillwater on October 15, 1966. They were married for 27 years before his passing on March 10, 1994. They had one son, Christopher Nixon born in 1971.
She was an active member of Stillwater First United Methodist Church, Stillwater Christian Women’s Club and Stillwater Women’s Club.
As a member of Stillwater Women’s Club, her favorite activity was assisting with the parade of homes, an annual fund raiser which benefits selected charities (such as domestic violence).
Dorothy enjoyed all types of God’s creatures such as feeding birds and squirrels outside her home.
Dorothy was an avid bowler in her younger years and sewed her own clothes. She loved to cook for family and friends.
After her retirement from OSU, Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her friends and cousins; whether it was a group meal or taking trips making memories together.
Dorothy loved spending time with her son Chris and wife Stacey; her grandkids: Grandson Shayden and Granddaughter Kinley.
Dorothy was truly a person put on this earth to demonstrate grace. Of equal importance is her wry sense of humor that she has a way of injecting when problems seem insurmountable.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; brother Bill Rickstrew; sister Peggy Jo Rickstrew; husband Elton Nixon.
Survivors include her son Christopher Nixon and wife Stacey of Stillwater; Grandchildren Shayden Nixon and Kinley Nixon of Stillwater; and numerous cousins.
Serving as pallbearers will be Shayden Nixon, Kong Chang, Gregg Russell, DJ Gall, Ray Little and John Humphrey. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Flatt, Charley Lawson and Bill Myers.
