Kay Dene McBride

A beautiful Angel to everyone who knew her, Kay Dene McBride was the mother of every space she walked into. She was the kind of woman who’d shower you with love, give you her last dollar, and tell you when you needed to get your act together.
Kay, 76, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 14, 2026, held in the love of her family.
Known fondly over the years as Ms. Kay, Kay, Kaydene, Mom, Momma, Granny, Grandma, and Grammy, she was born July 1, 1950, in McAlester, Oklahoma, to Eual and Mary (Payne) Knapp. Kay loved to refer to herself as "just a shy country girl." As a Talihina Alumni she was Salutatorian, Basketball Homecoming Queen, and married her high school football star and sweetheart, Kenneth McBride.
Growing up alongside her brothers, Kay was a worker both on the family ranch and in the house. She grew up riding horses and loved barrel racing and shooting guns when she could. She helped her mother with cooking, cleaning, and sewing, while also pitching in outdoors with ranch chores. She became an expert at ironing her brothers' western shirts and jeans—a skill her mother always praised as being better than her own, though Kay humbly insisted it was just because she did it every single day. She was also a gifted seamstress who stayed many late nights before Easter Sunday sewing beautiful church dresses for her daughters.
Kay earned her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with a minor in Business Management from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She and Kenneth moved in the Stillwater area to build their life and raise their four children. Though shy as a young woman, Kay grew into a wonderfully funny, sharp-witted person with a distinctive light-up-any-room laugh.
Her faith was a central pillar of her life. For many years, she served faithfully at Bible Baptist Church in children’s ministries and on the bus routes, later becoming an active member of Life.Church in Stillwater.
Kay spent the last decade of her life as the county bail bondsman, where she impacted lives through her selfless acts of service, going above and beyond for her clients whenever and however she could. She never saw her clients as criminals, but as people who deserved kindness and a second chance.
Kay was a woman of distinct passions and simple joys. She was famous for her fried potatoes—sliced into perfect, crunchy bite-sized pieces, cooked just like her mama made them. She loved reading romance novels, wearing cheetah print, bright reds, and blues, and drinking her sweet tea warm with no ice. In her later years, one of her favorite pastimes was casino hopping with her dear friend Katt. Together, they’d laugh, joke, and spend hours chatting with all the regulars—who loved Kay’s company just as much as she loved theirs. She possessed legendary, picture-perfect penmanship (which she humbly blamed on her teachers). An avid sports fan, she loved cheering on her OSU Cowboys with her family. Above all, she was endlessly patient, always the first to step up and serve others, and devoted her heart completely to her family.
As her family grew, her whole world expanded to center around her grandchildren. She wasn't just a Grandma—she was their safe place and quiet anchor, and she loved every single one of them.
In the last year and a half of her life, following a stroke, Kay was lovingly and relentlessly cared for at home by her devoted daughter, Kasey, whose unwavering dedication allowed Kay to spend her final days surrounded by the comfort of family. Kay lived a full, vibrant life, and her spirit leaves an everlasting legacy in all who knew her.
She is survived by her four children: Kasey Longan, Kendra Phears, and Karri McBride, all of Stillwater, OK; and Kenneth McBride and his wife, Sarah, of Portland, OR.
She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Blake Toves, Kadin Kaviani-Far, Halle Longan, Tius Oliver, Kyran Kaviani-Far, Reese Longan, Lily McBride, Juliun Oliver, Paris Oliver, Kaylee Phears, Liam McBride, and Khloe Phears; and one great-grandson, Lincoln Oliver.
Kay is further survived by her siblings: Linda Baugh; Eual Gene Knapp and wife Erin; Gerald Ray Knapp and wife Jana; Billy Earl Knapp and wife Gina; and Wesley W. Knapp; along with her extended brothers, many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eual and Mary Knapp, her sisters, Mary Louise Culley and Eual Dene Files and brother Joe Harold Knapp.
