Roger Ray Gierhart

Roger Ray Gierhart was born on January 17, 1953, to William R. (Bill) and Roberta Jean (Jeannie) Gierhart in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. He went on to be with the Lord after courageously battling an aggressive brain tumor (glioblastoma) on July 26th at his home in Houston, Texas. He was lovingly cared for by his wife, Pam and a dear family friend, Jeannie Spangler.

Roger attended Sapulpa Schools throughout his formative years, and music (trombone and tuba) was a very important part of his education. He auditioned and was chosen for the Oklahoma All State Band (3 consecutive years). His junior year he was one of two people chosen from the state of Oklahoma for the McDonalds All American High School Band. This band has the honor, each year, of marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. Those were both very fond memories for Roger, but the best part was he got all the McDonalds hamburgers he could eat for a year. He was a drum major of the Sapulpa high school marching band his senior year, and was also a member of the Tulsa Youth Symphony. Rounding out his formative years, he was an Eagle Scout, and was elected into the Order of the Arrow by his fellow scouts.

Roger continued his love for music at Oklahoma State University, and played in the marching and concert bands, as well as the orchestra, all four years. He met his wife, Pam at OSU. They were married their junior year and shared 52 wonderful years together.

Upon graduation from OSU in 1975, Roger began a 34 year journey in the oil and gas industry. His career began in Casper, Wyoming, with Amoco Production Company as a reservoir engineer. He retired in Houston, Texas with British Petroleum in 2009, having earned the title of Reservoir Engineering Advisor - Unconventional Gas - Coalbed Methane. Roger was very active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers and served on various committees through the years. He treasured the friendships he was blessed with during his work life.

Roger loved the Lord and cherished His grace and mercy. He loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his extended family and his many friends. He was an avid backpacker and loved the planning and implementation of a “good trip”. Hunting, fishing, and slalom water skiing on Grand Lake were just a few of his favorite pastimes. He loved “all things Clint Eastwood” and "all music Jackson Browne”. If he knew you well enough, you were getting a nickname.

Funeral Services in Houston, Texas will be held at Schmidt Funeral Home, 1344 Grand Parkway South, Katy, Texas, 77494 on Thursday, July 30th at 11 AM.

Interment will be at Grace Hill Cemetery; Perry, Oklahoma on Tuesday, August 4th, at 11 AM under the auspices of Dighton-Marler Funeral Home.

Roger is survived by: Wife, Pam of Houston, Texas; Son, Gabe (Ronell) of Durango, Colorado; Granddaughter, Giada Gierhart of Durango, Colorado; Son-in-law, Jeff Yagher of Dana Point; Granddaughter, Jillian Yagher of Dana Point, California; SIster, Karyn Gierhart of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Aunt, Brenda Gierhart of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Cousins, Francy (White) Bain of Clearwater, Florida; Laura (Gierhart) Hardy of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; and Paige (Gierhart) Thompson of Benton, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Jeannie Gierhart; Grandparents, Ray (Gabe) and Mary Francis Gierhart, and Roger and Roberta Miller; Uncle, Frank Gierhart; Aunt, Barbara (Gierhart) White; Uncle, George White; and Daughter, Emily (Gierhart) Yagher.
