Sylvia H. Young, born August 24, 1958, in Germany, passed away peacefully at home on January 21, 2026, in Perkins, Oklahoma. She was a remarkable individual whose life was defined by her dedication to her family, her love for animals, and her commendable service to the United States Air Force.
Sylvia experienced a unique childhood as the daughter of a military family, moving across the globe and ultimately graduating from Kadena AFB High School in Okinawa, Japan, in 1977. This diverse upbringing instilled in her a sense of adventure and resilience that she carried throughout her life. In pursuit of further education, Sylvia attended Grand Canyon University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English in 2020, an accomplishment that reflected her passion for learning.
In 1977, Sylvia joined the United States Air Force, where she served with distinction, achieving the rank of E4 Sergeant before her honorable discharge in 1981. She served as part of the Strategic Air Command with the KC135 aircraft, and later as a civilian contractor, where she contributed to aircrew training for the C141 and KC135 aircraft. She often spoke with pride about her time in the military, which shaped her character and values.
Sylvia married Scott Young in 1978 in Vernon, Texas, later divorcing him to raise her daughter as a strong single mother. She is survived by her parents, Ronald and Ilsa Gambill; her daughter, Shannon Marie Anderson, and her husband, Wil; and her beloved grandchildren, Ethan and Mattilynn Anderson. Sylvia is also survived by her siblings, Chris Gambill and wife Valicia, Andrea Shaffer and husband Paul, and her cherished nieces and nephews: Maleia Miller, Joe Gambill, Thomas Gambill, Christopher Shaffer, and Nicole Shaffer. Additionally, she is remembered fondly by her ex-sister-in-law, Jackie Christman, and her husband Scott.
A true animal lover, Sylvia dedicated her time and resources to animal rescue efforts, showing compassion for all living beings. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those she touched, as well as through the countless animals she helped.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her grandparents, Thomas and Dorothy Gambill, and her ex-husband Scott Young. Her spirit of kindness, adventure, and love will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Memorial donations may be made to any animal rescue in Sylvia's name.
